1st Grade

First graders extend their knowledge of language arts, learning skills that enable them to read and write more independently. Our program is designed to foster the academic, social, and emotional growth of young learners in a supportive and engaging environment. Through a well-rounded and interdisciplinary curriculum, first graders explore core subjects like language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts. Our goal is to provide a solid foundation that prepares students for future academic success while promoting their personal and social development.

Language Arts

First graders use the 95 Percent Phonics program, a research-based approach that emphasizes phonemic awareness and decoding skills. This phonics program is integrated into a literature-rich curriculum that includes reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. First graders also participate in reading practice to enhance their skills and comprehension.
In addition to phonics, students engage with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. This program emphasizes individualized and small-group instruction, guiding students to build confidence, strengthen their literacy abilities, and become independent, thoughtful readers and writers.

Mathematics

Mathematics instruction follows the Math Expressions curriculum, which aligns with the California State Standards for Mathematics. The program uses hands-on materials and interactive lessons to develop students' problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Concepts such as number sense, addition, subtraction, and basic geometry are introduced with differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners.

Science

Science instruction is centered on the FOSS (Full Option Science System) units, which emphasize hands-on experiences in life, physical, and earth sciences. Cross-curricular thematic units integrate science with language arts, math, and social studies. Topics include solids and liquids, air and water, and plants and animals, sparking students' natural curiosity and inquiry.

Social Studies

Our social studies curriculum is powered by InquirED, a hands-on, inquiry-based program that encourages students to explore key concepts such as community, geography, and historical figures. The program helps students connect to their world and understand their role in society. Social studies units are also coordinated with literature, math, and science themes, creating an interdisciplinary learning experience.

Character Education

Second Step, our character education program, helps first graders build empathy, manage emotions, and resolve conflicts. Students learn valuable social-emotional skills that support their personal development and create a positive, cooperative classroom environment.

Art

Art instruction is delivered twice a month in the Art Studio. Students explore various media and techniques in lessons that complement thematic units taught in the classroom. This allows students to express creativity while developing an appreciation for the fine arts.

Music

First graders receive weekly vocal music instruction from a Music Specialist. The curriculum includes singing, rhythm exercises, and music appreciation, helping students develop musical skills and confidence.

Physical Education (PE)

Students receive 100 minutes of physical education each week. In addition to 40 minutes led by the classroom teacher, students also participate in 60 minutes with a credentialed P.E. teacher twice a week. These activities enhance motor skills, coordination, and teamwork.

Library

Students visit the library weekly with their classroom teacher and a library technology aide. They enjoy storytime, engage with a variety of books, and check out library materials to foster a love of reading.

Technology

In Technology instruction, students develop essential digital literacy skills that support their academic growth across subjects such as math, science, and social studies. Each classroom is equipped with a cart of 1:1 iPads, generously funded by ONE Orinda donations, ensuring that every student has access to their own device for engaging with digital resources and completing projects. Alongside their weekly technology lessons, students also learn about digital citizenship through the Common Sense curriculum, which guides them in navigating the digital world responsibly and respectfully.

STEAM and Garden

All students participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) and Garden activities where they explore exciting design challenges, engage in innovative practices and practice hands-on activities.
